Indoor tanning started in the U.S. in the early 1970's with little regulation on equipment, bulbs and tanning times. After 10 plus years there were significant changes made improving indoor tanning and the industry itself experienced growth and acceptance.
Today the FDA is in charge of overseeing the indoor tanning industry, as a whole, and works with the FTC to help monitor labeling, branding and products. With these developments, the first Ultimate Tan was opened in Marlboro, New Jersey by Lyle Diamond in August 1984. Other locations in Matawan, Raritan, Middletown, Hillsborough and Flemington soon followed !
Over 20 years has passed and indoor tanning has changed drastically and Ultimate Tan has changed along with it. Tan times have gone from a high of 60 minutes to as little as 9 minutes today, with even much better results achieved. Tanning lotions have dramatically improved and have become their own industry while sunless services have been added to accomodate those at risk to uv-light.
